Brightening up your spaces whether it's indoors or outdoors can be quite challenging – today there are thousands of options available to the discerning user. Lighting columns are a great choice when it comes to lighting up residential, commercial or public spaces like parks, sports arenas, streets, plazas, malls and parking areas. Lighting in large spaces provides safety against criminal elements and also gives people a sense of security. Lighting columns are usually made of materials that can withstand environmental damage, extreme temperature, exposure to rain, snow, sun or sleet, tough enough to resist warping or bending, and they also need to be sturdy and durable. The most favored material of choice for lighting columns is either stainless steel, steel, galvanized steel or aluminum as all these materials are poor conductors of electricity and are safe for outdoor applications, or where there is exposure to water. Both aluminum and steel are rust-resistant and with regular painting or weather-proof coatings, they can provide years of good service. Many manufacturers also provide customized paint in colors of your choice – for instance, lighting columns in children's parks may be brightly colored with decorative motifs. Decorative lighting columns may also come in different finishes and designs like antique, classic, functional, etc and have different design elements like glass panels, decorative mounts and bases.

The height of lighting columns varies according to designated requirements which are supplied by the power authorities and there is usually an above-ground and a below-ground specified height which ensures that the lighting column is adequately planted in the ground and its center of gravity is correctly defined to prevent toppling or swaying. Impact-absorbent bases and slip-resistant bases are also a prerequisite in outdoor lighting columns.

Lighting columns used in street lighting have the typical elongated outreach arms that spread the light in many directions in the most economical way. These columns are extensively used in highway and motorway lighting where they provide visibility for safer driving and road use. Outreach arm designs are also great for pathways, promenades, recreational outdoor seating or cafes.

Whatever the nature of your requirement in terms of lighting, the use of the right kind of lighting column can make all the difference to your dark space. Unless you're a lighting expert or architect, it's best to get professional help when you're designing your lighting systems.
